The 5th annual Hockey Helps the Homeless Kitchener-Waterloo returns next week.

The event, presented by Freedom 55 Financial, allows amateur hockey players to lace up with NHL Alumni and Olympians to raise money and awareness surrounding the issue of homelessness.

“I love playing in these tournaments and I hear the same thing from the NHL guys” says 2007 Stanley Cup champion with the Anaheim Ducks, Brad May in a press release. “Hockey Helps the Homeless is an organization I'm proud to be a part of. The work that’s being done in communities all across Canada is truly making a difference.”

Since 2014, Hockey Helps the Homeless Kitchener-Waterloo has funded over 7,500 bed shelter nights locally.

This year, the goal is to raise $200,000 for their five agency partners; Lutherwood Safe Haven Shelter, House of Friendship, oneROOF Youth Services, YWCA Kitchener-Waterloo, and Homelessness and Housing Umbrella Group (HHUG).

Hockey stars attending this year include Georges Laraque, Wayne Primeau, Shayne Corson, Todd Bertuzzi, Rick Vaive, Natalie Spooner, and Bailey Bram.

The tournament runs from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. on Friday, October 26, with a dinner reception to follow at 5 p.m. at RIM Park in Waterloo. Games are free to watch.
