2021 warm with record precipitation in second half

By Blair Adams

Officials at the University of Waterloo Weather Station say there were two big local weather stories in 2021 — how warm it was throughout the year and how wet it was in the second half of 2021.

The weather station released its annual summary on Thursday.

Data shows it was the third warmest year since record keeping began back in 1914. The average annual temperature of 8.89 degrees Celsius was behind only 2012 and 1998.

The second half of 2021 is when it got really wet, with June to October now the wettest on record for those five months.

The highest 24 hour rainfall ever recorded at the station also happened in late September. Between Sept. 21 and 22, over 93 mm of rain came down.

Total precipitation for the year came in at over 1,000 mm, an average year is around 916 mm.

The coldest temp. we experienced last year was -23.6 degrees Celsius on February 21, but with the windchill it dipped to -35.6 degrees Celsius on January 29.

Our warmest day was August 26, when it got to 31.7 degrees Celsius, but felt like 44 with the humidex.
