The candidate you vote for school trustee will represent your voice on the school board, but you may be wondering what exactly they do?

Scott McMillan is the current chair of the Waterloo Region District School Board, who says that a main responsibility is figuring out the budget.

"It is a pretty significant budget. 30 per cent of our property tax dollars are going to education. So the school board has the second largest budget of any municipal organization in the region. Behind only the region itself. Larger than the city of the Kitchener, larger than the city of Waterloo," he says.

Overall, the trustees will be looking after a $850 million budget for the region's schools.

"Which is pretty significant and trustees are ultimately responsible for approving that budget. Trustees, more importantly, set forth the strategic direction of the board," he says. According to McMillan that plan would go on to guide the organization for the next three to four years.

The first of three meeting between candidates and public is set for Monday and McMillan hopes people will come out and meet their candidates.

McMillan says that trustees are there to help communicate between parents and staff.

"So we can help resolve issues with parents by putting them in contact with the right staff member. And once in a while we can advocate on behalf of parents to get a positive resolution."
