Martin's first OHL hat-trick seals Rangers win

Kitchener snaps a four-game losing streak, and wins for the first time in 2022

For the first time in 2022, the Kitchener Rangers are in the win column.

Mitchell Martin scored his first career OHL hat-trick to lead the Rangers to a 4-2 win over the Windsor Spitfires Friday night at the Aud.

The two teams went back and forth in the first period, but Martin provided the only offense through the first 20 minutes of play.

In the second, the Spitfires had a ton of offensive zone time, and the OHL's leader in points added to his total. Wyatt Johnston etched goal number 21 and point number 63 to tie the game.

Simon Motew answered a couple minutes later and Kitchener had the lead going into the third.

Michael Renwick unleashed a bomb from the point to tie it again about two minutes into the final frame.

However, Martin potted the winner on the power play and waved down Spitfires forward Josh Currie coming out of the sin bin following the goal.

His insurance marker with a couple minutes left was a working man's goal. Knocked on the ice in front of the Windsor bench, surrounded by Spits, Martin was able to send it down into the open cage.

Waterloo native Matt Onuska made 21 saves in the loss for Windsor, while Pavel Cajan stopped 34 of 36 in the win.

The Rangers snap a four-game losing skid, and improve to 4-1 against Windsor head-to-head.

They'll meet again in the border city on Sunday, but not until after the Rangers cross the US border for a Saturday night tilt in Flint.
