The University of Waterloo is taking precautions with the spread of the Omicron variant of COVID-19.

It's now planning to begin the winter term online.

Classes are scheduled to get underway on January 5, 2022.

The university says it does expect to return to some in-person classes as of Jan. 24, if public health conditions allow.

Residences will remain open and students can expect to hear more from campus housing officials in the days to come.

The last in-person exams are scheduled for this Friday, the rest will take place online next week.

Late Thursday, Wilfrid Laurier University also announced plans to begin the winter term online.

Classes at Laurier are scheduled to start January 4. If public health restrictions allow, WLU will resume in-person learning on Jan. 31.

Students will also be able to live in residence as planned.
