Six new COVID-related deaths reported in region Friday

Region of Waterloo Public Health reported six new COVID-related deaths on Friday afternoon — three women in their 80s — two women in their 90s, and a man who was in his 80s. It raises the local death toll to 334.

371 new COVID-19 cases were also confirmed, 81 added to previous daily totals. There have been 36,508 cases in the region since March, 2020.

Hospitalizations have declined by three to 145 — 27 patients are in intensive care (Hospital data is current to Jan. 19).

The active caseload is down to 3,407.

81.78 per cent of residents five and over in Waterloo Region are now fully vaccinated. Over 1.21 million doses have been administered to local residents, including over 246,000 third doses.

51.46 per cent of children between 5 and 11 have received at least one dose.

  • 7,777 cases have screened positive for variants of concern – 3,131 are the Alpha variant – 21 are linked to the Beta variant – 4,133 are linked to the Delta strain – 98 are linked to the Gamma variant – 394 are the Omicron variant

Meanwhile, the province reported 7,165 new cases Friday — Among the new cases reported 1,061 were unvaccinated, 221 partially vaccinated and 5,307 fully vaccinated. 576 cases were reported with vaccination status unknown.

  • 83 per cent of those 5 and over have been fully vaccinated
  • 4,114 people are in hospital testing positive for COVID-19. Of those, 54 per cent were admitted to the hospital because of COVID-19 and 46 per cent were admitted for other reasons, but have tested positive for COVID. There are 590 patients in Ontario ICUs with COVID. Of those, 81.5 per cent were admitted because of COVID-related illness

  • 898,589 resolved cases
  • 10,865 deaths (64 new)
  • 41,538 tests completed Thursday — Over 22.28 million since January 15, 2020
