Regional Council to vote on 24km of new bike lanes Tuesday

By Mark Pare

About 24 kilometres of new, temporary bike lanes could be going in soon.

Regional Council could vote Tuesday on a report that would call for the rapid closure of curb lanes, in favour of those bike lanes.  Some of those lanes would also be reserved for transit buses.

The following roads would be impacted:

  • King Street/Coronation Boulevard/Dundas Street from Bishop Street to Beverly Street in Cambridge
  • Frederick Street from Weber Street to Lancaster Street in Kitchener
  • Erb Street from Westmount Road to Caroline Street in Waterloo
  • Erb Street from Peppler Street to Margaret Avenue (one lane only) in Waterloo
  • Bridgeport Road from King Street to Margaret Avenue (one lane only) in Waterloo
  • Westmount Road from Queen's Boulevard to University Avenue in Kitchener/Waterloo

The reasoning behind the move came in a proposal from Climate Action Waterloo Region, who suggested the region take advantage of the lower traffic volumes by creating some new, temporary cycling lanes.

The approval would call for the allocation of a maximum $550,000.

If approved, the areas would be marked off with traffic cones in order to begin the work.
