Region confirms new COVID-related death, 33 cases Thursday

For the first time in a week, Region of Waterloo Public Health is reporting a new COVID-related death.

Health officials say a man in his 60s passed away. It puts the local death toll at 308.

33 new COVID-19 cases were also confirmed on Thursday, although two were removed from previous daily totals due to data clean up.

There have been 20,994 cases in Waterloo Region since March, 2020.

Hospitalizations remain unchanged at 11 — six people are in intensive care (Hospital data is current to Nov. 30).

The active caseload is 239.

79.29 per cent of residents five and over in Waterloo Region are now fully vaccinated. Over 952,000 doses have been administered to local residents.

16.06 per cent of children between 5 and 11 have received at least one dose.

Here are some other updates from the region's COVID summary dashboard: 

  • 7,201 cases have screened positive for variants of concern – 3,127 are the Alpha variant – 21 are linked to the Beta variant – 3,693 are linked to the Delta strain – 98 are linked to the Gamma variant – 262 cases where a mutation has been detected 
  • 20,445 resolved cases (97 per cent)
  • Over 647,000 tests have been done

There are nine outbreaks in the region:

  • NEW Southridge Public School (4 cases)
  • Cedar Creek Public School – cohort (2 cases)
  • Construction 16 (3 cases)
  • Retail 18 (3 cases)
  • JHCC Riverside Childcare Centre (2 cases)
  • Manufacturing/industrial 45 (2 cases)
  • Health services – chiropractic (3 cases)
  • Transportation 4 (3 cases)
  • Blessed Sacrament Catholic Elementary School (20 cases)

Meanwhile, the province reported 959 new cases Thursday — 446 were unvaccinated.
