Region adds 14 new COVID cases Wednesday

Region of Waterloo Public Health reported 14 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday. That compares with eight new cases on Tuesday.

The overall total is now 19,953.

Local hospitalizations are down to three --- two of which are in intensive care (Hospital data is current to October 18).

The active caseload is down to 100.

86 per cent of residents 12 and over are now fully vaccinated. 90 per cent of eligible residents have received at least one dose of the vaccine, which works out to over 903,000 doses.

Here are some other updates from the region's COVID summary dashboard: 

  • 6,620 cases have screened positive for variants of concern - 3,127 are the Alpha variant (first found in U.K.) - 21 are linked to the Beta variant (first detected in South Africa) - 3,111 are linked to the Delta strain (first located in India) - 98 are linked to the Gamma variant (first found in Brazil) - 263 cases where a mutation has been detected 
  • There have been 302 COVID-related deaths in the region. No new deaths were reported Wednesday
  • 19,547 resolved cases (98 per cent)
  • Over 611,000 tests have been done

There are four active outbreaks in the region:

  • Manufacturing/industrial 19 (2 cases)
  • Sir John A. Macdonald Secondary School (3 cases)
  • Parkway Public School (2 cases)
  • Trinity Village Studios Retirement Home (3 cases in residents)

Meanwhile, the province reported 304 new cases Wednesday --- 198 were unvaccinated.

The rest of the provincial COVID-19 totals are posted below:

  • 83 per cent of those 12 and over have been fully vaccinated
  • 595,867 total cases
  • 582,609 resolved cases
  • In hospital due to COVID - 113 unvaccinated - 10 partially vaccinated - 31 fully vaccinated. ICU data - 76 unvaccinated - 6 partially vaccinated - 23 fully vaccinated
  • 9,823 deaths (four new)
  • 31,569 tests completed Tuesday --- Over 18.63 million since January 15, 2020
