New COVID-related death reported in region, hospitalizations remain at 144

Region of Waterloo Public Health reported a new COVID-related death on Thursday, a woman who was in her 90s. It raises the local death toll to 347.

13 additional deaths have been confirmed by the health department since Monday.

213 COVID-19 cases were also added on Thursday, 17 to previous daily totals. There have been 37,725 cases in the region since March, 2020.

Hospitalizations remain at 144 — 22 patients are in intensive care (Hospital data is current to Jan. 25).

The active caseload is down to 2,000.

82.57 per cent of residents five and over in Waterloo Region are now fully vaccinated. Over 1.23 million doses have been administered to local residents, including over 260,000 third doses.

53.04 per cent of children between 5 and 11 have received at least one dose.

  • 7,984 cases have screened positive for variants of concern – 3,131 are the Alpha variant – 21 are linked to the Beta variant – 4,149 are linked to the Delta strain – 98 are linked to the Gamma variant – 585 are the Omicron variant

  • Over 733,000 tests have been done

Meanwhile, the province reported 5,852 new cases Thursday — Among the new cases 960 were unvaccinated, 236 partially vaccinated and 4,004 fully vaccinated.

  • 83 per cent of those 5 and over have been fully vaccinated
  • 3,645 people are in hospital testing positive for COVID-19. Of those, 56 per cent were hospitalized because of COVID. There are 599 patients in Ontario ICUs with COVID. Of those, 82 per cent were admitted because of COVID-19
  • 1,016,009 total cases
  • 950,795 resolved cases
  • 11,230 deaths (70 new)
  • 33,560 tests completed Wednesday — Over 22.47 million since January 15, 2020
