New COVID-related death, 592 cases reported in region Friday

Region of Waterloo Public Health reported a new COVID-related death on Friday, a woman who was in her 90s, according to the health department. It raises the local death toll to 322.

The health department also confirmed 592 new COVID-19 cases, 99 of those added to previous daily totals.

There have been 33,834 local cases since March, 2020.

The most current statistics from hospitals that are part of the Waterloo-Wellington network show 151 patients are in area hospitals with COVID-19. 17 of those patients are in intensive care.

Hospital data on the region's COVID summary dashboard is two days behind (current to Jan. 12. It shows 106 in hospital — 12 in intensive care.

The active caseload is 7,760.

81.26 per cent of residents five and over in Waterloo Region are now fully vaccinated. Over 1.19 million doses have been administered to local residents, including over 225,000 third doses.

48.82 per cent of children between 5 and 11 have received at least one dose.

  • Over 718,000 tests have been done

Meanwhile, the province reported 10,964 new cases Friday — Among the new cases reported 1,458 were unvaccinated, 365 partially vaccinated and 8,518 fully vaccinated. 623 cases were reported without vaccination status information. 

The rest of the provincial COVID-19 totals are posted below:

  • 82 per cent of those 5 and over have been fully vaccinated
  • 3,814 people are in hospital testing positive for COVID-19. Of those, 53 per cent were admitted because of COVID-19, and the other 47 per cent were admitted for a different reason and tested positive for COVID. There are 527 patients in Ontario ICUs with COVID, 80 per cent were admitted for COVID-19 related critical illness
  • 926,904 total cases
  • 804,886 resolved cases
  • 10,522 deaths (42 new)
  • 58,031 tests completed Thursday — Over 22.03 million since January 15, 2020
