The bylaw requiring residents to wear a face covering in enclosed public spaces has caused a raging debate in the community.

However, the President & CEO of the Greater K-W Chamber of Commerce sees the bylaw as a positive for businesses in Waterloo Region who have been unsure of where to stand on the issue.

On Wednesday, Ian McLean appeared on the Mike Farwell Show on 570 NEWS to talk about how the bylaw offered clarity for business going forward. That it was of a more educational approach, rather than the region out to charge people for not following the rules.

"One thing that's really important is certainty, and I think that there was a lot of confusion around whether masks were going to be mandated or not, " he said, referencing Guelph and Wellington County establishing their own mask bylaw early on.

McLean says it also helps businesses avoid the conversation about why they are requiring customers to wear masks, by putting it onto the region.

"It allows them to be able to say, 'it's not my choice, or it's not what I have necessarily said, it's what the region has said.'"

He suspects that come Monday, there will be more people choosing to wear masks rather than continue to argue the matter. He says the best thing for the economy and local business is to help avoid a second wave of the coronavirus.

"Some people may not like it, but the bottom line is this. Do you want the economy to close down again? And I would argue, that there's no one that says that that's a good thing, and so the price for individuals and business, to make sure that doesn't happen, is to wear a mask."

The mandatory mask bylaw goes into effect on Monday.
