City of Waterloo, Cambridge laying off part-time employees (update)

By CityNews Kitchener Staff

The City of Waterloo has had to temporarily lay off over 430 part-time, casual and seasonal employees.

The municipality is doing so in an effort to mitigate some of the losses due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The layoffs will take effect on April 13.

The city is also cutting down on costs with facilities being closed.

City and regional facilities will be closed until at least May 4.

A spokesperson tells 570 NEWS they are hopeful the situation resolves quickly so they can welcome our impacted employees back and return to regular business as soon as possible.

Meantime, the City of Cambridge has also laid off over 400 part-time staff.

That includes delaying the hiring of 80 people for seasonal jobs.

“We value all of our employees and are grateful for their efforts during this very stressful time. We hope the situation resolves quickly so we can welcome our impacted employees back soon and return to regular business as soon as possible. These decisions will be re-evaluated based on Waterloo Region Public Health advice and government directives.” City Manager, David Calder said in an email to 570 NEWS.
