14 new cases of COVID-19 in Waterloo Region

Region of Waterloo Public Health reported 14 new cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday morning.

It raises the local total to 117.

15 cases have also been resolved.

The region is now reporting outbreaks at two long-term care and retirement homes – Sunnyside Home and Highview Residences.

The chief operating officer with Highview Residences tells 570 NEWS two residents in Blair Creek House in Kitchener have tested positive, adding they have implemented all the Ministry of Health best practices for managing the positive cases. 

“Our first priority is for the health and safety of our residents and staff,” said Joy Birch. “We are working closely with the Region of Waterloo Public Health to ensure we are following strict infection prevention and control guidelines,”

A staff member at Sunnyside also tested positive for the virus.

47 of the 117 cases are the result of community transmission.

Meantime, the region's acting medical officer of health confirmed the region's second death related to COVID-19, late Wednesday morning.

A man, in his 50s, had a pre-existing medical condition.

41-year-old John Tsai passed away on Tuesday – he also had pre-existing medical conditions.

The province reported 426 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, which is the largest number so far.

It brings the provincial total to close to 2,400.
