Young girl in Wellington County dies after contracting COVID-19

A devastating reminder on the impacts of COVID-19.

Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health is confirming a young girl in Wellington County has died after contracting COVID.

The health unit told CityNews 570 the girl is between the ages of zero and 10, and was COVID positive at the time of death.

No other information is known about the cause of death, including if the girl had pre-existing conditions.

“Since the pandemic began, more than 100 people in Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph have died from COVID-19, each one of them a profound and permanent loss to those who loved them and to the fabric of our community,” said Dr. Nicola Mercer, the region's medical officer of health.

“Our region has now experienced its first death of a child with the virus.”

“No words are sufficient to comfort those grieving this terrible loss. In this tragic moment, I offer my deepest condolences on behalf of everyone at Public Health to the family.”

Public Health Ontario said of the over 10,000 deaths in Ontario, nine have been under the age of 20.

In Waterloo Region, a young child under the age of 10 died after contracting COVID-19 in September 2021.
