Mom pleads guilty in drowning death of toddler son near Orangeville

By CityNews Staff

The mother of a three year-old boy who drowned in the Grand River nearly four years ago has pleaded guilty to criminal negligence causing death.

Michelle Hanson, now 38, drove around a road closed barrier and into the river near Orangeville in February 2018.

The body of her son, Kaden Young, was found two months later.

Hanson originally faced three charges, including impaired driving causing death, dangerous driving causing death, and criminal negligence causing death.

In an agreed statement of facts, the prosecution says Hanson took her son out for a drive around 1 a.m. that night because he couldn’t sleep.

Documents filed in court allege she had percocet, oxycontin, cocaine and alcohol in her system the night her son drowned.

A sentencing hearing will be held in January.
