Hospital in St. Marys temporarily closes emergency department again

By CityNews Kitchener Staff

A hospital in the Town of St. Marys has temporarily closed its emergency department due to ongoing staffing challenges.

St. Marys Memorial Hospital has been forced to reduce its hours several times over the summer because of the issue.

The trend continued on Friday, as the emergency department closed as of 7 p.m.

It's set to reopen Saturday at 7 a.m.

A notice from the Huron Perth Health Care Alliance read, “Anyone requiring immediate medical attention should call 9-1-1. Paramedics will remain available to the community and will re-route to the nearest available Emergency Department to ensure local residents continue to have access to the emergency services they need.”

The health unit said increased demands on the healthcare system have been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, and the pressures are expected to continue into the fall.
