Guelph marijuana company looks to hire more staff ahead of legalization

A Guelph marijuana company is ready to put plants in the ground in the coming weeks.

CannTX has just received a licence to grow medical marijuana at its production facility in Puslinch, but expects to ramp up production when pot is legalized.

This means a hiring blitz is on the horizon as the company prepares for the recreational market.

CannTX co-founder Buck Young says the company currently has 16 employees on its payroll in Puslinch, with plans to double its workforce.

“We're still hiring. At CannTX we've got a diverse set of folks from various backgrounds including biotech, plant sciences, microbiology, engineering, communications and finance.” But he says they're still looking to fill all kinds of roles – from production jobs to the front office.

“This is a great part of Ontario to be setting up a cannabis business,” says Young. “We have good access to the capital markets in Toronto. We've got really talented folks coming out of the universities in K-W, Hamilton and Guelph.”

Young says the company received its cultivation license in great time to build up inventory before recreational sales begin.

While many medical marijuana users have voiced concern about their portion of the market being swallowed up come October, Young believes medical marijuana can exist in a recreational climate.

“I think what you see is a plateauing of the recruitment of medical patients, doesn't seem to cannibalize the medical market,” he says. “We expect that there will still be several hundred thousand medical patients in Canada procuring their products directly from licensed producers.”

He anticipates CannTX will receive its license to sell to patients later this year, and that they'll be producing more than 6 tonnes of product once their facility is fully outfitted in 2019.
