Premier Francois Legault says conditions not met to reopen Montreal schools, businesses

By Canadian Press

MONTREAL — The Quebec government says conditions haven’t been met to allow elementary schools to reopen in the greater Montreal area, so they will remain closed until late August.

Premier Francois Legault says daycares in the Montreal area will stay shut until at least June 1, while officials haven’t made a firm decision about what to do with retail businesses in the Montreal area.

Montreal’s reopening has steadily been pushed back — most recently to May 25 — due to the number of COVID-19 infections and deaths in the region.

Legault made the announcement today while visiting the province’s COVID-19 epicentre.

Schools, daycares and businesses have gradually reopened outside the Montreal area, where the COVID-19 situation is deemed under control by health authorities.

But the Montreal accounts for more than 20,000 confirmed cases and more than 2,000 of the province’s reported deaths.
