York Road improvements to continue into 2026, what to expect this summer in Guelph

By Christine Clark

It’s a road many can’t stand in Guelph, a road plagued with construction and delays.

York Road was at the top of the CAA’s Worst Roads in Western Region list, and the City says they are working to upgrade the area, with a budget-conscious mindset.

Already, the four-phase project has seen improvements on York Road over the past several years.

Phase 1 saw work done on York from Wyndham Street North through to Ontario Street, which wrapped up in 2017.

Phase 2, continuing east, saw work from Ontario Street to Stevenson Street South completed last year.

Here we are in 2023 , with Phase 3 tackling the portion of York Road from Stevenson to Victoria Road South.

That has already seen a full closure of York from Stevenson Street to Brockville Avenue. The later half of the project extending to Victoria, will lead to closures and detours all summer long, extending to next summer as well.

This road reconstruction is all aimed at increasing water and wastewater services for future city growth, as well as implementing multimodal transportation options for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists.

The fourth and final phase will get underway next year, tackling York Road from Victoria through to just east of Watson Road.

That phase is still in the design phase is expected to start next year wrapping up in late 2026.

Full details of the project can be found here.
