City of Kitchener seeking submissions for ‘Spotlight on Sport’ display at new rec centre

By Erin Anderson

The City of Kitchener is seeking submissions for a sports-themed display at the new Cowan Recreation Centre.

The city says it wants to put a spotlight on local sports through a storytelling space that will feature digital displays, memorabilia, photos, and profiles.

They also want to include rotating community-submitted stories that highlight athletes, coaches, volunteers, and others who have contributed to the sports and recreation landscape in Kitchener.

The ‘Spotlight on Sport’ space will be located in the rec centre’s main corridor and the inaugural exhibit will include star athletes Leticia Skeete, Markus Cimermancic, Sarah Pavan, and Tyler Miller.

“Every day, athletes, coaches, volunteers, officials, and organizations across Kitchener make a positive difference in the lives of others, here in Kitchener and often beyond our community’s borders,” said Mayor Berry Vrbanovic in a release. “The Spotlight on Sport at the Cowan Recreation Centre gives us an opportunity to celebrate their contributions, preserve their stories, and inspire future generations to get involved.”

Community members can submit stories or nominate a person, team, or organization to be featured by clicking here.

The Cowan Recreation Centre at RBJ Schlegel Park is set to hold a grand opening celebration on Nov. 14.
