Rosalie Favell Retrospective reaches KW Art Gallery

The Kitchener-Waterloo Art Gallery is welcoming Rosalie Favell for its upcoming exhibition: “Belonging”.
Favell is an award-winning Red River Métis artist, with the exhibition’s opening celebration starting at 7 p.m. on Aug 7. The display will remain at the KW Art Gallery until Nov 22.
In a news release, the KW Art Gallery describes Favell’s work as:
“Groundbreaking photographic practice—from seminal series like Living Evidence, her expansive archive Facing the Camera, and Plain(s) Warrior Artist. Favell’s body of work explores nuanced ideas around identity, empowerment, and 2SLGBTQ+ community/desire, among other essential subjects.”
Favell’s current series is “Facing the Camera” featuring portraits of hundreds of indigenous artists across Canada, the USA, and Australia. Favell shared her motivation for the series:
“The impetus for the series derived from my realization that a document had not been made of individuals who make up the Indigenous arts community.”
In the same news release, Shirley Madill, the Executive Director shares the impact she believes that Favell’s work has had:
“The influence that Rosalie’s work has made regarding such complex themes related to Indigenous identity has been impactful and can never be underestimated.”
After the opening celebrations, the KW Art Gallery will host an in-depth talk about the display, between Rosalie Favell and Ryan Rice, the curator of the exhibit. All of the events will be free to attend.
Admission is free for those interested in visiting the Kitchener-Waterloo Art Gallery and seeing the exhibition.
