It’s another year of national recognition for a multi-faceted gem in the Region of Waterloo, ranking among the top restaurants in the country.
The restaurant in Cambridge’s Langdon Hall Country House Hotel and Spa has been recognized on the latest list from media organization and magazine Canada’s 100 Best, taking the 18th spot on the best restaurants list.
Touted by the culinary magazine as “Ontario’s most beloved and sophisticated country house hotel,” Canada’s 100 Best mentioned that Langdon Hall’s largely Ontario-sourced, “terroir-driven cuisine that values flavour and sensory satisfaction as highly as meticulous technique” was one of the factors that led to the restaurant’s recognition on the list. Notes from the review also highlighted a “very proper dining room of pressed linens, polished crystal, formal service.”
Also recognized was Langdon Hall’s Executive Chef, Jason Bangerter, who explores the kitchen, surrounding gardens and forest as his own “playground.” Chef Bangerter sports a long list of achievements outside of the recent list, including recognition for earning Langdon Hall the Five Diamond Restaurant Award from CAA/AAA.
The Cambridge restaurant was the only Waterloo Region location recognized on the list, in good company alongside 32 Ontario restaurants on the top 100. Gourmands who don’t mind a short trip down Highway 401 can find 23 of those ranking restaurants in Toronto alone, including two of the top five.
Establishments that made the cut were ranked by a panel of 160 voting judges, said to be composed of a mix of “informed culinary enthusiasts, food writers and critics, chefs, restaurateurs and other food-service professionals.”
“Each judge is asked to submit a list of their top 10 restaurant experiences of the previous year, ranking them with consideration to service, decor, depth of the cellar and – above all else – food quality,” reads the report.
The top spot on the list was awarded to Restaurant Pearl Morissette in Jordan Station, surrounded by “17 hectares of vineyard, farmland and vegetable gardens” and said to have “elevated Ontario wine-country cuisine to a level on par with the greatest wine regions of the world.”
