Ceremonial gong disappears from regional cancer center

By CityNews Kitchener Staff

Police have been notified after a ceremonial gong disappeared from a cancer center in Kitchener.

The Waterloo Regional Health Network (WRHN) confirms the ceremonial gong at the WRHN Cancer Centre has gone missing.

Desa Hobbs, the Vice President of Patient Care and Regional Vice President of the Waterloo Wellington Regional Cancer Program, called it deeply disheartening.

“This gong is more than an object,” said Hobbs in a statement. “It represents resilience, hope, and the strength of patients along their cancer journeys.”

Cancer patients at WRHN @ Midtown use the going to mark important milestones while they’re in hospital.

Hobbs said they’re working to replace it as soon as possible.

“We remain committed to supporting our patients and ensuring these traditions endure. We appreciate the community’s understanding and support.”

The Waterloo Regional Police Service (WRPS) says the incident has been reported and officers are investigating, but no additional details are available as of Monday afternoon.
