Truck fraud investigation has ties to Waterloo Region

Guelph police have arrested a man believed to be connected to a string of U-Haul truck thefts.

Early Wednesday evening, police were called to a business on Stone Road West where a man was attempting to rent a U-Haul with an Alberta driver’s licence.

The employee recognized the photo on the licence from a number of instances where U-Haul trucks were fraudulently rented and never returned.

Arresting officers arrived and the 33-year-old Quebec man was taken into custody and the licence was seized and found to have a fake name.

Police beleive the same suspect was involved in at least five U-Haul rentals using various aliases in Waterloo Region and Quebec.

He was charged with fraud over $5,000 and possessing an identity document in another name.

He was held for a bail hearing on Thursday.
