Cambridge Food Bank launches spring donation drive to support 2,000 monthly clients

The spring food drive is underway at the Cambridge Food Bank, which serves 2,000 clients per month.

Development Manager, Sarah Tooze, told 570 NewsRadio there are no specific goals in the spring drive when it comes to how much food and monetary support it needs to bring in.

Tooze said they’re seeking enough help to last throughout the summer “to keep providing food to those families who turn to us for assistance.”

She added, “To feed those families for several days during emergency situations, it costs a lot, and it requires a lot of poundage,” of food.

Tooze said financial donations allow the food bank to purchase staples as needed.

But in terms of non-perishable food donations, she highlighted the need for:

  • Cereals and breakfast foods
  • Sandwich spreads like peanut butter, mayonaise, and jams
  • School snacks
  • High protein canned goods, like meat and fish

The food bank’s Spring Into Action Food & Fund Drive kicks off Friday with a collection event in the Zehrs parking lot at 400 Conestoga Blvd.

Cedar Signs will match all financial donations throughout the spring drive, to a maximum of $10,000.

A statement from the Cambridge Food Bank says it supported more than 10,700 individuals across 4,664 households, and more than 1,300 of those households were accessing their services for the first time.

And over the course of the year, 24,268 food hampers were distributed to households in Cambridge and North Dumfries.

The spring food drive ends on May 31.

The Cambridge Food Bank, meanwhile, is gearing up to move from its Ainslie Street location in downtown Galt to its new home at 384 Franklin Blvd., a spacious warehouse with truck loading docks.
