After what it called “careful consideration, discussion, and constructive debate,” the Township of Wellesley has tentatively approved its 2026 draft budget.
Council members have agreed to a 3.49 per cent tax levy impact heading into 2026, meaning the average homeowner can expect to pay approximately $42.83 more on next year’s property taxes.
The final number is a reduction from the initially proposed 4.99 per cent tax levy increase.
The 2026 draft budget prioritizes the long-term sustainability of our Township,” it said in a release. “Council is committed to investing in the essential infrastructure: our roads, bridges, facilities, and parks, that makes our Township a vibrant place to live.”
It said that much of the process for the budget was guided by its Asset Management Plan, which was instituted heading into 2025, as a way to ensure funds would be properly set aside to specifically maintain and replace township-owned assets before they fall into disrepair.
With that, a large majority of the 2026 budget is centred on that focus, saying it is a necessary and responsible investment in the long-term health and safety of our community.”
Residents across the township can expect to see the regional portion account for 56 per cent of the total levy, with the school board accounting for 13 per cent, and the township itself accounting for 31 per cent.
On the regional side, residents can expect to pay an average of $142 more on their property tax bill, accounting for the regional increase of $88 and the policing portion at $54.
Even though the draft budget has now been tentatively approved, there are still a few steps before it can officially be finalized.
The final budget will be presented at a public meeting held during the township’s next council meeting, where it is expected to be set in stone.
That meeting is currently set for Tuesday, Jan. 13, at the Wellesley Township council chambers at 4805 William Hastings Line.
