Senior charged with careless driving after sending teen to hospital

A Wilmot senior is facing careless driving charges after leaving the scene of a collision in New Hamburg that sent a teen to hospital earlier this month, and police say they may not have even realized they were initially involved in that crash.

It was on Nov. 12, around 5:50 p.m., when police were called to the area of Union Street near Huron Street in New Hamburg for reports of a crash involving a pedestrian, later identified as a 13-year-old.

An early investigation had revealed that the teen was crossing the street on Huron when they were hit by a vehicle turning from Huron Street onto Union. The involved driver did not stop, leaving the scene of the collision.

The teen is said to have sustained non-life-threatening physical injuries as a result of the crash. At the time, police said they were looking for a white sedan or SUV.

Providing an update on Thursday, Waterloo regional police said the driver of that collision later contacted police after seeing the news, and realizing that they may have been involved in the crash.

A 69-year-old woman from Wilmot has since been charged with careless driving.
