DeBoer welcomed into Rangers Level of Legacy, Kitchener beat Saginaw 5-2

It was a night to remember for Pete DeBoer, as the Kitchener Rangers extended their winning streak to four games, defeating the Saginaw Spirit 5-2.

The former Rangers bench boss and general manager was honoured before Friday’s game, becoming the first person to join the inaugural Rangers Level of Legacy. During DeBoer’s tenure, the Rangers won two OHL championships and the Memorial Cup in 2003. He would go on to coach in the NHL for teams including the Florida Panthers, Dallas Stars, New Jersey Devils, San Jose Sharks and Vegas Golden Knights.

“We had a lot of players come through here that bled blue, red and white for you guys,” DeBoer said to an arena full of fans. “They did it because you guys showed up every Friday night, the Ranger nation, and they wanted to, so thank you.”

After the ceremony, the Rangers didn’t waste any time as they came out scoring two quick goals from Kaden Schneider and Christian Humphreys in the first minutes of the opening period. Saginaw got one back on the power-play from Egor Barabanov, but surrendered another goal, this time from Cameron Reid, to make it 3-1 after 20 minutes.

Matthew Hlacar padded the lead to make it 4-1 with his second goal of the year, marking the only scoring of the second period.

Saginaw’s Carson Harmer brought the game back within two with less than 15 minutes left in the third, but Tanner Lam took advantage of an empty net to get the fifth Rangers goal of the night.

Lam finished the night with first-star honours, recording his 100th OHL career point with a three-point night.

The Rangers will have Saturday off before welcoming the Kingston Frontenacs on Sunday for the Remembrance Day game.

Puck drop is at 2 p.m.
