For the second game in a row, a goaltender for the Kitchener Rangers has earned their first career OHL shutout.
Jason Schaubel stopped 30/30 shots in the Rangers’ 4-0 win over the Brampton Steelheads, getting his first career shutout just one day after his teammate Christian Kirsch achieved the same feat.
“It’s pure excitement and it was just a big relief,” said Schaubel after the game.
“You always want to get your first and get the monkey off the back. But, it was definitely nerve racking last minute for sure.”
Both teams were scoreless during the first period of play. Jack Pridham scored the game’s first goal at 0:41 in the second, followed by Alexander Bilecki at 9:28.
Christian Humphreys and Matthew Hlacar added goals of their own in the third period to settle the final score.
Saturday’s win marks the third win in a row for the Rangers and the sixth in a row where they earned a point. Humphreys earned first star honours with three points on the night (one goal and two assists), with Schaubel earning the second star and Pridham the third.
The Rangers welcome the Saginaw Spirit on Friday where they will be inducting former head coach Peter Deboer into the Kitchener Rangers Level of Legacy.
