Rangers come short of comeback, lose in overtime to Colts

Despite their overtime loss to the Barrie Colts Saturday evening, the Kitchener Rangers walked away with a point.

Luca Romano got the Rangers on the board with a power-play goal at 10:12 in the first period to give them the 1-0 lead. It would not last long, as a goal from Barrie’s Brad Gardiner tied things up at 11:29, leading to a 1-1 score by the end of 20 minutes.

The Colts came out red hot to start the second period, taking a 3-1 lead with two quick goals in the first five minutes of the period, including a power play goal from Kashawn Aitcheson.

Christian Humphreys cut into the Colts’ lead with the Rangers’ second power play goal of the night, assisted by Cameron Reid and Luca Romano. Jack Pridham tied it up with a short-handed goal in the last moments of the second period, making it 3-3.

Neither team could capitalize in the third period, forcing the game to overtime. It would only take 29 seconds for Barrie to score the eventual game-winner from Cole Beaudoin, sealing the 4-3 loss for the East Avenue Blue.

Humphreys becomes the team leader in points on the season with 16, after recording another second multi-point game following Friday’s win over the Flint Firebirds. Luca Romano finished the game with three points of his own, with one goal and two assists.

The Rangers will close out a three-in-three weekend when they welcome the North Bay Battalion on Sunday evening.

Puck drop is at 6 p.m.
