Vehicle theft investigation in Kitchener leads to a litany of charges

What began as a stolen pick-up truck investigation by Waterloo Regional Police Service (WRPS) ended with the Guelph police canine unit making the arrest.

It was around 3:10 p.m. on Wednesday when WRPS were alerted to the stolen 2021 Dodge Ram pick-up from a driveway in the Laurentian West area of Kitchener.

The credit cards that had been left in the truck were then used around the region through the afternoon.

At around 6:15 that evening, as police were still investigating the theft, there was a report that the truck was being used in a break-and-enter in the area of Old Country Drive and Strasburg Road.

Police spotted the truck as they were responding, but it took off at a high rate of speed.

About an hour-and-a-half later, the suspect vehicle was located in Elmira, and police were able to render the truck undrivable.

The driver took off on foot, but officers from WRPS’ Neighbourhood Policing and Emergency Response Team, Guelph Police Service’s Canine Unit, and the Ontario Provincial Police conducted a search and located and arrested the man.

The investigation turned up identity documents, break-in tools and drugs.

A 31-year-old Kitchener man is facing several criminal charges including:

  • Possession of stolen property over $5,000
  • Possession of stolen property under $5,000
  • Possession of identity documents
  • Break and enter – commit theft
  • Possession of break and enter instruments
  • Possession of a Schedule 1 Substance (three counts)
  • Operation while prohibited
  • Dangerous operation

Police say the investigation is ongoing and more charges are likely.
