Region starts delivering new garbage and green carts to townships

The Region of Waterloo has begun delivering garbage and green carts to residents in Wellesley, Wilmot, Woolwich, and North Dumfries as the municipality prepares to switch over to cart-based waste collection in March.

According to the region, delivery of carts began on Monday as every home in Waterloo Region is set to receive one black garbage cart, one green organics cart, and one food scraps container, along with a 12-page information packet on why they’re switching to this cart-based system.

Residents in the townships will receive their new carts within the next two to three weeks, with households in Kitchener, Cambridge, and Waterloo to follow thereafter.

In total, the region will be handing out more than 340,000 bins by March. Unless people specifically choose to receive a small garbage cart, the black cart that shows up on the doorstep will be able to hold three full bags of garbage.

According to the region, its new system will cut back on litter, improve the efficiency of collection, and take some physical strain off of its collection crews.

By downloading the free Waste Whiz app, residents can receive more information about the new collection system and updates about when their new bin will come.
