For another week, no members of the public will be allowed to attend a City of Cambridge council meeting in person, as “heightened security measures remain in place.”
Councillors will gather in person, and the public can still take part, but only through virtual online connections.
This week’s meetings with councillors are a statutory public meeting and a Committee of Adjustment meeting.
A statement from a City Hall media representative says, “The City’s meetings on Tuesday, Oct. 7 and Wednesday, Oct. 8, will be held virtually for the public. Council and staff will attend in person. Heightened security measures remain in place to ensure a safe and respectful environment for Council, staff and community members.”
Public restrictions for the sake of safety began last month, when the Sept. 23 council meeting was switched to an online format.
That would have been the first council gathering with the city’s new bag check policy for anyone from the meeting coming to a meeting.
On Sept. 22, city officials reached out to Waterloo regional police about what police describe as “a threatening voicemail received from a member of the community.”
Police told 570 NewsRadio, “the involved community member was located and was trespassed from all City of Cambridge properties. There were no grounds for any criminal charges and no arrest in relation to this incident.”
