Guelph man loses 18-karat gold Rolex watch in distraction theft

Guelph police said a victim lost his gold Rolex watch in a distraction theft that happened in the middle of a parking lot.

Police said it happened around 12:30, Monday afternoon, in the downtown core of the Royal City.

They said two people in a white SUV pulled up beside a man in a parking lot, and a woman in the vehicle started asking for directions to a restaurant.

Police said during their conversation, she offered to sell the victim a Rolex and a gold necklace.

He at first refused, but the police said the woman in the SUV persisted, and she put a watch on his wrist to try on.

Police said there was no sale, and the couple in the SUV left after the victim gave them the directions they had asked for.

That’s when the victim noticed his real 18-karat gold Rolex Datejust had been stolen, and a fake Rolex had been put on his wrist in its place.

Officers told 570 NewsRadio the value of the stolen watch is between $7,000 and $10,000.

The suspects are described as “approximately 30 years of age and were of Arab descent. The male had dark hair with no facial hair, and the female was wearing a white hijab.”

Toronto Police recently reported an arrest of two people for a very similar alleged distraction theft in Scarborough, involving a man and a woman with a similar description to the Guelph suspects.

The two accused in Toronto were charged and given a court date.

As to whether the Guelph suspects might be the Toronto suspects, Sgt. Kyle Grant from Guelph Police tells 570 NewsRadio, “The investigation is ongoing at this time and all possibilities are being considered.”
