A key landmark might go through some changes in the future, as the city council approves new funding to help develop updates on the future of Waterloo Park through the year 2050.
It comes as the city is looking to update the Waterloo Park Master Plan, which was first developed back in 1989 and was redeveloped twenty years later in 2009.
Since that time, the ‘Jewel of Waterloo’ has gone through some major changes, including the addition of the spray pad, skate park, fountains, and more.
Even still, some updates are right on the near horizon, with some upgrades slated for the natural play area on Father David Bauer Drive later this year.
During a recent council meeting, city councillors unanimously approved $200,000 in funding towards the development of the new plans, now allowing city staff to get rolling on seeing what changes could be beneficial to the park, looking ahead.

The next steps are public consultation meetings, with the city hoping to find what the local community would like to see changed or improved at Waterloo Park.
Those are expected to begin in early 2026.
After that, city staff say they will collect that feedback and use it to draw up an initial recommendation for Waterloo city council in the spring of next year.
