Iconic Waterloo building to make way for residential towers

An iconic old building in Uptown Waterloo is set to make way for more residential development.

Developers VanMar Constructors Inc. have purchased Erb & Good Family Funeral Home on King Street in Waterloo with plans to redevelop that lot into a pair of tall residential towers.

On Monday, the City of Waterloo council will host a public meeting on the topic of VanMar’s plans to build two towers, 33 and 37 storeys, in place of Erb & Good Family Funeral Home. The development would include more than 800 units of housing and commercial space at the building’s base.

The owners of Erb & Good announced that they will continue to serve the community, as they have for the past 80 years, at a new location to be built in Kitchener.

While they have yet to share specific building designs or move-in dates, owners Paula Heimpel and Rebecca Hlavac announced to 570 NewsRadio that their new building will be located at 1014 Victoria St. North in Kitchener.

They will continue to operate on King Street in Waterloo until their new building in Kitchener is move-in ready, meaning there will be no disruption to services.

“We know that our community is fond of our current building, and we are too, but the reality is that it’s an aging structure that is costly to maintain,” said Heimpel in a message to 570 NewsRadio.

“Since firming up the location, we have turned our attention to designing the building and securing the necessary approvals and permits to begin construction. We are taking our time to ensure the new facility is thoughtfully designed for today’s families and tomorrow’s, reflecting Erb & Good’s commitment to long-term service.”

Erb & Good is the longest-serving, independently owned funeral service provider in Waterloo Region, and has been serving the community since 1946.
