While celebrating a huge cash injection for the new Rec Plex being built in the southeast corner of Cambridge, the mayor of the city revealed yet another major venue for “sports and festivals” is in the works.
Mayor Jan Liggett said at a news conference that there will be an item in the next city budget to convert a parcel of city-owned land on the outskirts of Cambridge into such a venue.
Liggett said during a news conference, “Maybe I shouldn’t say it right now…I’ll let you know, it was going to be a surprise: we have an outdoor facility that we’re going to be working on in next year’s budget.”
She said, “It’ll be the start of something special in our community.”
When pressed by 570 NewsRadio for more details, she joked, “No, no, no, no, I’m not telling you…it’s a teaser, I’m just trying to pique your interest.”
Liggett described the site as an open field for larger outdoor sports and festivals.
She added that the site will “stop some of the noise problems that we’ve been having.”
The mayor went on to say councillors bear the brunt of complaints about noise, adding Ward 3 councillor Corey Kimpson gets the most of those complaints. Liggett did not elaborate on that. Riverside Park in Ward 3 is a common site for major cultural events.
Liggett said with community growth in Cambridge, “it only increases those problems if we don’t have a place for them to celebrate.”
The mayor made those comments during the question and answer period of Wednesday’s announcement of $19.5 million in funding from the Ontario government for the new Rec Plex being built on Wesley Boulevard.
