A Kitchener man was arrested and charged after drunkenly assaulting a police officer in Guelph on Thursday morning.
According to officials, the incident began at about 2:40 a.m. as an officer was patrolling Silvercreek Parkway South. She saw a man slumped over, sitting behind the wheel of a stopped vehicle.
The officer removed the man from the vehicle, but he broke free by shoving the officer, getting back into the vehicle and driving away.
The vehicle was followed for more than a kilometre before stopping in a plaza parking lot. The man refused to get out of the vehicle, so the officers smashed his window to get him out before he had time to drive off again.
The 43-year-old Kitchener man was arrested, and tests confirmed he had more than the legal limit of alcohol in his system.
The man was charged with impaired driving, dangerous driving, assault police, flight from police and several Highway Traffic Act offences.
As it turns out, the vehicle was actually registered under his mother’s name.
