Waterloo neighbourhood once again seeing rise in thefts from vehicles

It was a problem in May, a problem in June, and now a problem in July.
Thefts from vehicles in Waterloo’s Northdale neighbourhood are persisting.
The area under question includes the university district of the city, surrounded by Phillip Street, University Avenue East, King Street North and Columbia Street East.
Waterloo Regional Police first issued a warning about a rise in thefts from vehicles at the beginning of the summer, noting that between May and June, nine vehicle owners had items stolen from their cars.
Now, another warning about a significant rise in this type of crime, with a map showing over 25 locations of reported thefts from vehicles since the beginning of July.
On Wednesday, police also warned about thefts from vehicles just last week, with a suspect photo as well.
The items most commonly taken include electronics, cash, wallets, IDs, passports, tools, jewellery, and sports equipment.
Police say in some cases bank cards have been stolen and then used at a nearby store.
“Please report any suspicious activity in your neighbourhood to police immediately. If possible, try to obtain a description and direction of travel of the suspect and vehicle,” said WRPS.
