There were major delays on Highway 401 leaving Waterloo Region on Tuesday afternoon as Ontario Provincial Police searched for a driver who fled after a crash.
*401 callers to 570 NewsRadio said multiple police cruisers were pulled off on the shoulder in the eastbound lanes of the 401 near Highway 6 South. They also reported seeing helicopters flying in the sky above the area.
On social media, Wellington County OPP said there was an increased police presence around Highway 6 and Calfass Road in Puslinch, and Concession Road 7.
“There is no threat to public safety. Please avoid the area at this time,” wrote OPP.
OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt later confirmed that police were actively searching for a person who fled the scene of a single-vehicle rollover on the 401 and Highway 6/Brock Road area.
No lanes were blocked on the 401, but the extensive police presence caused a visual distraction, leading to significant delays for drivers travelling in both directions. OPP cleared the scene around 5:30 p.m.
Schmidt said the male they were searching for was located. He was taken into custody, and OPP continue to investigate.
