Impaired crash in stolen vehicle leads to drug charges in Guelph

A Kitchener woman is facing a long list of charges after being involved in a crash with a stolen vehicle while impaired.

It happened shortly before 7:30 a.m. on Thursday when Guelph police responded alongside emergency services to a crash at the intersection of Wellington Street West and Imperial Road South in Guelph.

Police say the initial investigation showed the driver of a Kia van failed to navigate a curve in the road, crossing the centre lane and slamming into another vehicle head-on.

The driver of that Kia was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Police later determined the van was a stolen vehicle, bearing the license plates of another separate stolen vehicle.

As police continued their investigation, officers found several empty alcohol cans around the drivers seat area of the vehicle. A further search found unspecified quantities of suspected crystal methamphetamine, fentanyl, cocaine and Hydromorphone, alongside a scale and drug packaging.

The driver’s bag was also searched, and found to contain a number of identification cards and other cards in various names.

The driver of the stolen Kia van, a 29-year-old Kitchener woman, now faces several charges including:

  • Impaired driving;
  • Dangerous driving;
  • Possessing stolen property over $5,000;
  • Possessing stolen property under $5,000;
  • Four counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking; and
  • Eleven counts of possessing identity documents.

The woman continues to receive medical care, and is set to appear in court on June 24.
