A gaggle of geese is on the move as part of a pilot relocation program by the City of Waterloo.
According to the municipality, a flock of Canada geese was rounded up Tuesday morning in Waterloo Park and sent to a sanctuary.
The city obtained a permit from the Canadian Wildlife Service and said the geese were relocated humanely, and families and mated pairs weren’t separated.
The geese were put in a trailer and sent to the Jack Miner Migratory Bird Sanctuary in Kingsville.
The city is working to address feathered over-population in Waterloo Park, which is typically home to about 350 Canada geese seasonally.
“We’re not trying to get rid of all the Canada geese in Waterloo Park,” said Robin Milne, Waterloo’s director of parks, forestry and cemetery services, in a release. “We do want to reduce conflicts between geese and people, and cut down on the mess from goose poop.”
If the relocation program is deemed successful, it could become an annual initiative in Waterloo.
Last year, the City of Waterloo put up several coyote decoys to deter geese from the popular park, but that was discontinued.
