Outages in Kitchener impact thousands of customers, power largely restored

By CityNews Kitchener Staff

Thousands of customers in Kitchener were without power on Monday afternoon.

Enova Power reported two major outages shortly after 4 p.m.

Just over 3,600 customers were impacted in a large area that spanned from Bridge Street East to the King Street East/Sportsworld Drive area.

Parts of Victoria Street, River Road, Ottawa Street, and Fairway Road were also affected.

The outages were quickly restored but power went out again around 5:30 p.m.

As of 6 p.m. the outage was isolated to the King Street/Sportsworld/Pioneer Tower Road area with an estimated restoration time of 8:30 p.m. The cause was listed as an emergency.

Freeport Bridge temporarily blocked

*401 callers to 570 NewsRadio also reported downed lines Monday afternoon blocking the Freeport Bridge.

A spokesperson with Enova Power said they were communication lines, not power lines, and were not connected to the outages.

Waterloo Regional Police confirmed they were aware of that incident, “We’ve received reports of downed wires.”

The Kitchener Fire Department said the downed lines sparked a small brush fire in the area that was quickly extinguished.
