Details emerge after a truck stolen from Cambridge ends with smashed police cars

Full details have come to light after a truck cab stolen from Cambridge ended with a takedown in Toronto, and left police cars damaged in a very slow getaway attempt.

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) released a report about what happened on the afternoon of Jan. 20.

It all began with the Cambridge owner of a white Volvo truck cab calling police to say they had used GPS to track the stolen vehicle to a parking lot in Etobicoke, just off Highway 27.

Toronto police arrived and found a man in a ski mask in the truck, and the hood of the truck was up.

The SIU said the suspect drove away in the truck cab, with the hood still up, going at about 10 km/h through the parking lot and down Queen’s Plate Drive.

He hit and damaged two police cars in the getaway attempt.

“The truck drove into the front of (one) cruiser, spinning it around 180 degrees, causing significant damage,” the report reads.

A civilian driving a transport truck in the area used his truck to block the slowly escaping truck cab.

The suspect complained of a wrist injury after he was put in handcuffs, and the police watchdog agency was notified.

Toronto police told 570 NewsRadio the suspect was a 46-year-old man from Brampton, who was given 20 charges, including three counts of assault peace officer, and dangerous operation.

The SIU cleared the police officers of any wrongdoing.
