City of Kitchener set to share plans for parks, gardens and green spaces

The City of Kitchener is set to create and curate some more green spaces for the community to enjoy.

Those who enjoy a slow walk on a Sunday afternoon, or a sprint on some freshly cut grass, the Places and Spaces Master Plan has plenty to be excited about.

It’s a long, detailed report that’s been in the works for nearly five years and will be presented to the City of Kitchener Community and Infrastructure Services Committee on Monday, outlining 50 recommendations for upgrades and expansions at local parks and green spaces.

Over the next decade, the municipality has plans to add more dog parks to the city’s south end and “micro dog parks” within existing community spaces.

The city also has plans to add more lighting to fields so that they can be used into the evenings, convert some natural fields into artificial turf, and add an outdoor, refrigerated skating area.

For those with a green thumb, the city is coordinating a garden to be used as a place to grow food to fight food insecurity and also to teach folks how to grow their own food.

Places and Spaces is an update to the 2010 Parks Strategic Plan.
