April showers set to roll into May across Waterloo Region

By Justin Koehler

Keep those umbrellas, rubber boots, and rain coats on standby this week, with plenty of showers in the forecast across Waterloo Region.

Environment Canada is calling for periods of rain Sunday, mainly beginning in the afternoon, lasting overnight, and even pushing into the work week.

“It sticks around for Monday, Tuesday, and even into Wednesday as well,” said 570 Meteorologist Carl Lam. “You can thank that low-pressure system that’s still back towards the states in Michigan. It’s just kind of stalled out there, it’s not really moving, just because of how it’s atmospherically set up.”

He stated that the active, wet weather to kick off the first full week of May is mainly due to an Omega Block, created by two pressure systems coming from the U.S.

“The jet stream has to move around the high-pressure system and under the low-pressure system. It shapes out like the Greek letter ‘omega,’ and it really just kind of leaves everything stuck in place.”

It means those April showers will really roll into May showers to kick off the month, but Lam does say there is a bit of good news coming on the horizon.

“This wet weather pattern looks like it will finally start to break down by late Wednesday night into Thursday, and then we will start to dry things out. But again, it’s going to be a pretty long stretch of just unsettled weather across Cambridge, Kitchener, and Waterloo.”

It’s all good news for anyone who enjoys singing in the rain, but get ready to bask in a bit of sun later in the week, with a mix of sun and cloud in the forecast beginning Thursday and lasting through into the weekend.
