Waterloo man arrested for allegedly ramming police car in getaway

A Waterloo man is facing thirteen charges after allegedly ramming a police cruiser as he tried to make a getaway in a stolen vehicle.

Waterloo Regional Police say officers used GPS tracking to find the stolen vehicle, a Honda, in a parking lot around Parkside Drive and Northfield Drive West, just before 9:30, Monday morning.

They say the man behind the wheel put the stolen vehicle into reverse, ramming into a police car, before he struck several other parked vehicles.

The suspect then allegedly drove over the curb and across grass, right into oncoming traffic — police called off the chase for safety’s sake.

Officers found the Honda abandoned around King Street North and Northfield Drive, and then found the suspect hiding in a building nearby.

He tried to flee again, on foot this time, but was quickly chased down and arrested.

The 44-year old man from Waterloo is facing a slew of charges related to theft including:

  • Theft motor vehicle
  • Possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000
  • Possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000
  • Dangerous operation
  • Operation of a conveyance while prohibited (two counts)
  • Flight from police
  • Fail to remain
  • Fail to report accident
  • Drive while suspended
  • Attempt theft under $5,000 (three counts)

Police said the Honda had been stolen from a lot on Frobisher Drive.
