WRPS chase suspect on foot after midnight vehicle theft in Cambridge

By Justin Koehler

A stolen vehicle, a 401 getaway, and a foot chase, all led to a busy Saturday night for Waterloo Regional Police Service (WRPS) after calls came in that a vehicle had been taken right from a driveway in Cambridge.

The calls came forward just after midnight on Saturday, with officers responding to the area of Meadowcreek Lane and Old Mill Road after reports of a white BMW vehicle stolen from a home.

Police were quickly able to locate the vehicle, still being driven by a suspect at high speeds on the westbound lanes of Highway 401. Due to safety concerns around the speed of the vehicle, officers elected not to engage in a pursuit.

The vehicle in question was located once again just west of Cambridge in North Dumfries in the area of Dickie Settlement Road and Whistle Bare Road.

Police were able to stop the vehicle in its tracks, with the driver rushing out and attempting to flee through a nearby construction site. The suspect eluded police for a short time before officers located them lying in a ditch just down Whistle Bare Road. Officers placed the suspect under arrest.

A 27-year-old Guelph man is now facing a series of charges, including:

  • Motor vehicle theft;
  • Possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000;
  • Theft under $5,000;
  • Dangerous operation;
  • Operation of a conveyance while prohibited; and
  • Flight from police officer.

The accused was held in custody for a bail hearing, with the investigation still ongoing through WRPS.

It’s asking anyone with further details of the incident, including photos or video, to reach out at 519-570-9777, extension 6399.
