Police reporting a dozen vehicle thefts and attempts in just five days

Waterloo regional police (WRPS) are warning vehicle owners to be vigilant in protecting their investment following a car-theft spree over the last week.

WRPS report 12 vehicle thefts and attempted theft reports between April 18 and April 22.

In a press release, police said over those five days, eight vehicles were stolen and there were four attempts. The thieves exclusively targeted Toyota Tundra pick-ups, Toyota Highlander and Lexus SUVs.

Officials said the culprits were using various reprogramming techniques. They say often the thieves will force their way into the vehicle, then use the tech to reprogram a blank key fob, which is used to start the vehicle

Police have made two arrests related to the thefts. On April 19, a 25-year-old man and a 26-year-old man, both from Quebec, were charged with multiple criminal charges. They were arrested by provincial police near Napanee, Ont.

According to the release, it has been determined the two men were responsible for two of the vehicle thefts.

WRPS have provided several tips for protecting your vehicle. If you see a crime in progress, call 9-1-1.
